Eligibility criteria for the Irish Government Scholarship

To be eligible for the Government of Ireland Master's and PhD Scholarships in all disciplines, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Required language: English
• Eligible countries:  All countries of the world
• The applicant must hold a bachelor's degree with first- or upper-second-class honours, or its equivalent. If the results of the bachelor's examinations are not known at the time of application, the Council may make a provisional offer of a scholarship provided that the bachelor's result, or its equivalent, is a first- or upper-second-class honours. If the applicant does not hold a bachelor's degree with first- or upper-second-class honours, or its equivalent, they must hold a master's degree. The Council's decision
  regarding an applicant's eligibility based on these criteria is final.
• The applicant must not have had two previous unsuccessful applications to the program, including strategic partner topics within the program.
• The applicant must be new to the degree for which they are intended to receive Council funding and have been formally accepted by the relevant department or school.
• Applicants applying for a Research Master's Scholarship must not currently hold, or have previously held, a postgraduate scholarship from the Council.
• Applicants for a PhD scholarship must not currently hold or have previously held any postgraduate scholarship from the Council other than those that would enable them to obtain a research master's degree.
• Applicants will be classified into one of two categories based on nationality and residency.
• For the first category, applicants must meet both of the following criteria: be citizens of a European Economic Area (EEA) Member State or Switzerland and have been ordinarily resident in an EEA Member State or Switzerland for a continuous period of 3 of the 5 years preceding 1 October.
